New More Open World Zelda Coming to Wii U in 2015

The Legend of Zelda Wii U, E3 2014

Nintendo producer Eiji Aonuma unveiled a new entry in The Legend of Zelda series at the company’s digital E3 event today. The game will have a more open world style than recent Zelda games, more akin in style to the very first Zelda game on the NES. Areas of the world will feel more connected and places can be visited in any order.

Graphically the game looks very different from the more realistic tech demo that was shown at E3 2011, having more in common with the cel-shaded style of The Wind Waker and Skyward Sword. The world appears much richer in detail and more alive than those games however.

The game, simply being referred to as The Legend of Zelda for now, will launch on the Wii U in 2015.

To see footage of the game in action check out the video below, The Zelda coverage begins at 19:55.

Drive a Mercedes-Benz in Mario Kart 8

Mario Kart 8, Mercedes Benz, Wii U

Nintendo and Mercedes-Benz have joined forces to offer the first piece of DLC for Mario Kart 8 in the form of a free Mercedes kart. The free content is part of a marketing campaign to promote the new GLA class model. The kart will be available later this summer in Japan with distribution elsewhere to be announced “in the near future” according to Nintendo UK.

In addition to the kart a sponsored tournament will be held this Autumn/Fall.

While this partnership has come somewhat out of left-field it does confirm the possibility of further DLC for Mario Kart 8 further down the line.

Mercedes-Benz Japan released the following trailer to announce the partnership. It includes an 8-bit depiction of the GLA car as well as a rather unsettling live-action Mario.

Even More Hyrule Warriors Details

Link, Hyrule Warriors, Wii U

Hyrule Warriors will have a local multiplayer mode according to the latest issue of Japanese gaming magazine Famitsu. The article, translated by Siliconera, tells us that one player can play via the TV screen while the second player uses the Wii U Gamepad.

Impa has also now been confirmed as a playable character with others yet to be revealed. Impa will act as leader of the Elite Guard and will fight using a long sword.

There seems to be a decent amount of depth to the combat system, equipping different weapons will alter a character’s fighting style, for example one-handed swords will allow quicker movement but heavier weapons will inflict more damage. Characters and weapons can also be upgraded as you progress through the game.

In addition several classic features of the Zelda series will be prominent, such as the Spin Attack, bombs and Z-targeting which lets you dodge attacks and target enemy weak points.

The game is 70% of the way through development and will be playable at E3. As we revealed yesterday the game will be available in Japan on August 14th.

Check out the screenshot gallery below for several new images courtesy of Famitsu, including what is most likely the villain of the game – the witch Shia.

It was also revealed that Team Ninja staff Hisashi Koinuma and Yosuke Hayasahi will be assisting Omega Force with development as producers. Eiji Aonuma, famed for working as producer on the Zelda series, will also be serving in a supervisory capacity.

The story will involve Link setting off to rescue Princess Zelda from a new villain, a witch named Shia. Familiar locations from the Zelda series, such as Hyrule Field, will also appear and the game will feature some ‘unexpected’ playable characters.

We will bring you more details as they emerge.

Footage of Cancelled Darth Maul Game Emerges

Red Fly Studios recently revealed that they were working on a game based on Darth Maul, the mysterious Sith Lord from Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace. Unfortunately the game was cancelled on June 24, 2011 when the project had barely gone beyond the prototype phase.

Red Fly were also behind the development of Star Wars: The Force Unleashed 2 on the Nintendo Wii – the cancelled Maul game was originally set to be a Wii exclusive but soon became a multi-format project. Plot details are scarce (a script writer had yet to even be hired)  but George Lucas apparently requested that the story be told in a ‘buddy cop’ style, with Darth Maul teaming up with Darth Talon. The gameplay would have been a combination of stealth and lightsaber combat. You can see Maul dispatching a group of Mandalorian enemies in the video below.

Red Fly employees believe the cancellation was connected to the sale of Lucasfilm and LucasArts to Disney, as was the case with Star Wars 1313.

There’s more coverage of the game, and some exclusive footage, over at Game Informer.
