Syfy is adapting space opera novel series “The Expanse” for television, Syfy President Dave Howe has announced. The Expanse was written by Daniel Abraham and Ty Franck under the pen name James S. A. Corey. The first novel in the series, “Leviathan Wakes” was nominated for a Hugo Award and a Locus Award, while the second, “Caliban’s War”, was also nominated for a Locus Award. The story is set two hundred years in the future and “follows the case of a missing young woman who brings a hardened detective and a rogue ship’s captain together in a race across the solar system to expose the greatest conspiracy in human history.”
Syfy has ordered a ten episode series which will be produced by Alcon Television Group (ATG). Academy Award-nominated screenwriters Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby (Children of Men, Iron Man) wrote the pilot episode and will continue to work on the series as writers and executive producers.
ATG President Sharon Hall said of the project:
The Expanse is an addictive, sophisticated, character-driven franchise and Mark and Hawk are the perfect people to steer it. Their script is a totally immersive and accessible sci-fi journey. We are thrilled to be in business with Syfy on this venture.
The Expanse joins other shows such as 12 Monkeys, Z Nation and Ascension in Syfy’s current drive to produce exciting new content.
The BBC has announced that Keeley Hawes (Ashes to Ashes, Line of Duty) is to star in an episode of Doctor Who. Hawes will play Ms. Delphox, who is described as ‘a powerful out of this world character with a dark secret.’ The episode will see the Doctor (Peter Capaldi) and Clara (Jenna Coleman) ‘come face to face with the mysterious Ms Delphox when they arrive on a strange and puzzling planet.’
Steve Thompson, who wrote previous Doctor Who episodes Journey to the Centre of the Tardis and The Curse of the Black Spot, is on writing duty while Douglas Mackinnon, who worked with Hawes on Line of Duty, will direct.
Keeley Hawes said on landing the role:
I am delighted to join Doctor Who and to be working with this incredible team. Ms Delphox is a great character and someone I’ve had a lot of fun playing.
While Showrunner, Steven Moffat, added:
Anyone watching Jed Mercurio’s amazing Line of Duty will know that Keeley Hawes is having one hell of year. And now it’s about to get even better as she achieves the greatest villainy yet attempted on Doctor Who: she plays a banker.
The announcement was made at midnight on Doctor Who’s official Facebook page, which could hint at an added importance for the character, with such announcements usually reserved for major news such as Matt Smith’s departure. With Hawes’ character having a ‘dark secret’ could she be someone from the Doctor’s past? We may have to wait until the Autumn, when the new series premieres, to find out.
Doctor Who is getting a new recurring character played by Samuel Anderson (The History Boys, Gavin & Stacey, Emmerdale) for Peter Capaldi’s first series as the Doctor. Anderson will play Danny Pink, a teacher at Coal Hill School, where Clara Oswald (Jenna Coleman) also works.
Anderson said of being cast:
I was so excited to join Doctor Who I wanted to jump and click my heels, but I was scared I might not come down before filming started! It’s a quintessential part of British culture and I can’t believe I’m part of it. It’s an honour to be able to work alongside Peter Capaldi and Jenna Coleman and I can’t wait to show people how my character becomes involved with such a fantastic duo!
Showrunner Steven Moffat added:
‘For the fourth time in Doctor Who history, Coal Hill School is coming to the aid of the TARDIS. In 1963 teachers Ian Chesterton and Barbara Wright accompanied the First Doctor. These days it’s the turn of Jenna Coleman as Clara Oswald. And very soon now, Sam Anderson as Danny Pink will be entering the world of the Doctor. But how and why? Answers are coming later this year in Peter Capaldi’s first series of Doctor Who!
Series 8 will begin airing later this year, with filming currently underway on episode 4, guest starring Robert Goodman (Gangs of New York, Game of Thrones) and episode 5 which will co-star Jonathan Bailey (Broadchurch) and Pippa Bennett-Warner (The Smoke, Death in Paradise).
A full synopsis of the episode has also been released as follows:
The Doctors embark on their greatest adventure in this 50th Anniversary Special: in 2013, something terrible is awakening in London’s National Gallery; in 1562, a murderous plot is afoot in Elizabethan England; and somewhere in space an ancient battle reaches its devastating conclusion.
All of reality is at stake as the Doctor’s own dangerous past comes back to haunt him.
The moment is coming…
The episode will broadcast simultaneously around the globe on 23 November, starting at 7.50pm GMT.
Marvel and Netflix have agreed a deal to create four live action series based on characters from Marvel comics. The first series to hit the popular online TV service will be based on Daredevil, followed by shows focusing on Jessica Jones, Iron Fist and Luke Cage. Each series will be intertwined, with all four taking place in “the gritty world of heroes and villains of Hell’s Kitchen, New York”, eventually leading up to a miniseries entitled “The Defenders” where the four heroes will team up.
The first series will begin in 2015 and Netflix has committed to a minimum of thirteen episodes for each series, meaning we have a whole lot of Marvel TV to look forward to.
The project will be produced by Marvel Television in association with ABC Television Studios. Alan Fine, President of Marvel Entertainment said:
This deal is unparalleled in its scope and size, and reinforces our commitment to deliver Marvel’s brand, content and characters across all platforms of storytelling. Netflix offers an incredible platform for the kind of rich storytelling that is Marvel’s specialty. This serialized epic expands the narrative possibilities of on-demand television and gives fans the flexibility to immerse themselves how and when they want in what’s sure to be a thrilling and engaging adventure.
Netflix Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos added:
Marvel’s movies, such as ‘Iron Man’ and ‘Marvel’s The Avengers,’ are huge favorites on our service around the world. Like Disney, Marvel is a known and loved brand that travels. With ‘House of Cards’ and our other original series, we have pioneered new approaches to storytelling and to global distribution and we’re thrilled to be working with Disney and Marvel to take our brand of television to new levels with a creative project of this magnitude.
Marvel has wasted no time in working on a new Daredevil project after they got the rights to the character back from 20th Century Fox in 2012. The most recent filmed version of the character was the 2003 movie starring Ben Affleck.
The BBC has released a special trailer celebrating 50 years of Doctor Who. It features all eleven incarnations of the Doctor as well as many famous companions and enemies from the show’s long history. There is just over a month left to wait now until The Day of The Doctor is broadcast simultaneously around the globe on November 23.
