Leviathan Wakes Cover, The Expanse series #1

Syfy is adapting space opera novel series “The Expanse” for television, Syfy President Dave Howe has announced. The Expanse was written by Daniel Abraham and Ty Franck under the pen name James S. A. Corey. The first novel in the series, “Leviathan Wakes” was nominated for a Hugo Award and a Locus Award, while the second, “Caliban’s War”, was also nominated for a Locus Award. The story is set two hundred years in the future and “follows the case of a missing young woman who brings a hardened detective and a rogue ship’s captain together in a race across the solar system to expose the greatest conspiracy in human history.”

Syfy has ordered a ten episode series which will be produced by Alcon Television Group (ATG). Academy Award-nominated screenwriters Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby (Children of Men, Iron Man) wrote the pilot episode and will continue to work on the series as writers and executive producers.

ATG President Sharon Hall said of the project:

The Expanse is an addictive, sophisticated, character-driven franchise and Mark and Hawk are the perfect people to steer it. Their script is a totally immersive and accessible sci-fi journey. We are thrilled to be in business with Syfy on this venture.

The Expanse joins other shows such as 12 Monkeys, Z Nation and Ascension in Syfy’s current drive to produce exciting new content.

Keeley Hawes to Guest Star in Doctor Who Series 8

msdelphoxThe BBC has announced that Keeley Hawes (Ashes to AshesLine of Duty) is to star in an episode of Doctor Who. Hawes will play Ms. Delphox, who is described as ‘a powerful out of this world character with a dark secret.’ The episode will see the Doctor (Peter Capaldi) and Clara (Jenna Coleman) ‘come face to face with the mysterious Ms Delphox when they arrive on a strange and puzzling planet.’

Steve Thompson, who wrote previous Doctor Who episodes Journey to the Centre of the Tardis and The Curse of the Black Spot, is on writing duty while Douglas Mackinnon, who worked with Hawes on Line of Duty, will direct.

Keeley Hawes said on landing the role:

I am delighted to join Doctor Who and to be working with this incredible team.  Ms Delphox is a great character and someone I’ve had a lot of fun playing.

While Showrunner, Steven Moffat, added:

Anyone watching Jed Mercurio’s amazing Line of Duty will know that Keeley Hawes is having one hell of year. And now it’s about to get even better as she achieves the greatest villainy yet attempted on Doctor Who: she plays a banker.

The announcement was made at midnight on Doctor Who’s official Facebook page, which could hint at an added importance for the character, with such announcements usually reserved for major news such as Matt Smith’s departure. With Hawes’ character having a ‘dark secret’ could she be someone from the Doctor’s past? We may have to wait until the Autumn, when the new series premieres, to find out.

Doctor Who Gets New Recurring Character for Series 8

dannypinkDoctor Who is getting  a new recurring character played by Samuel Anderson (The History Boys, Gavin & Stacey, Emmerdale) for Peter Capaldi’s first series as the Doctor. Anderson will play Danny Pink, a teacher at Coal Hill School, where Clara Oswald (Jenna Coleman) also works.

Anderson said of being cast:

I was so excited to join Doctor Who I wanted to jump and click my heels, but I was scared I might not come down before filming started! It’s a quintessential part of British culture and I can’t believe I’m part of it. It’s an honour to be able to work alongside Peter Capaldi and Jenna Coleman and I can’t wait to show people how my character becomes involved with such a fantastic duo!

Showrunner Steven Moffat added:

‘For the fourth time in Doctor Who history, Coal Hill School is coming to the aid of the TARDIS. In 1963 teachers Ian Chesterton and Barbara Wright accompanied the First Doctor. These days it’s the turn of Jenna Coleman as Clara Oswald. And very soon now, Sam Anderson as Danny Pink will be entering the world of the Doctor. But how and why? Answers are coming later this year in Peter Capaldi’s first series of Doctor Who!

Series 8 will begin airing later this year, with filming currently underway on episode 4, guest starring Robert Goodman (Gangs of New York, Game of Thrones) and episode 5 which will co-star Jonathan Bailey (Broadchurch) and Pippa Bennett-Warner (The Smoke, Death in Paradise).

Heroes to Return in New Miniseries

heroesNBC Entertainment President Jennifer Salke has announced that the popular series, Heroes, will return to the network with a 13 episode miniseries entitled Heroes Reborn. NBC is keeping story and character details quiet for the time being although they have revealed that original creator and executive producer Tim Kring will return to helm the new series.

Heroes Reborn will be a stand-alone story arc but Jennifer Salke has stated that she “won’t rule out the possibility of some of the show’s original cast members popping back in.” Prior to the 2015 premiere NBC plans to produce a digital series to introduce new characters and storylines.

Jennifer Salke said this of the show’s revival:

The enormous impact ‘Heroes’ had on the television landscape when it first launched in 2006 was eye-opening. Shows with that kind of resonance don’t come around often and we thought it was time for another installment. We’re thrilled that visionary creator Tim Kring was as excited about jumping back into this show as we were and we look forward to all the new textures and layers Tim plans to add to his original concept.
