X-Wing and Tie Fighter Games to be Re-released Digitally

Star Wars: X-Wing, Star Wars: Tie Fighter, Lucasarts

Classic space combat games Star Wars: X-Wing and Star Wars: Tie Fighter are to be released digitally for the first time this week. The games were originally released by LucasArts in the 90’s and are considered to be among the best Star Wars games ever made.

Both games will be available via GoG (Good Old Games) priced at $10 each and as early as tomorrow, they will be in their special edition forms and upgraded to run on modern computers. The announcement was made in a forum post that has since been taken down as apparently the cat was let out of the bag a little prematurely. Other LucasArts games will also soon be coming to the service, including Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, Sam and Max and Fate of Atlantis.

Is this the First Set Photo from Star Wars Episode VII?

Star Wars Episode 7 Set Photo

Abu Dhabi based newspaper The National has taken what is believed to be the first on-set photograph of Star Wars Episode VII. The images show a large encampment in the Abu Dhabi desert, which many are reporting as an indication that Tatooine will appear in the new movie, although filming for the desert planet in previous Star Wars movies has always taken place in Tunisia. What has caught the attention of most Star Wars fans about the picture however is the large grey, round piece of equipment in the centre of the photograph which resembles a foot from one of the empire’s AT-ATs (pictured below) from The Empire Strikes Back.

ATAT

Reporters at The National however believe it also bears a resemblance to the escape pod used by R2-D2 and C3PO at the beginning of A New Hope. The fact that this relatively minor detail is the cause of such discussion just emphasizes how much secrecy there is surrounding the new movie.

With ‘Star Wars Day’ approaching (May the 4th) perhaps more concrete details will be revealed then. We will of course keep you up to date when and if that happens.

Footage of Cancelled Darth Maul Game Emerges

Red Fly Studios recently revealed that they were working on a game based on Darth Maul, the mysterious Sith Lord from Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace. Unfortunately the game was cancelled on June 24, 2011 when the project had barely gone beyond the prototype phase.

Red Fly were also behind the development of Star Wars: The Force Unleashed 2 on the Nintendo Wii – the cancelled Maul game was originally set to be a Wii exclusive but soon became a multi-format project. Plot details are scarce (a script writer had yet to even be hired)  but George Lucas apparently requested that the story be told in a ‘buddy cop’ style, with Darth Maul teaming up with Darth Talon. The gameplay would have been a combination of stealth and lightsaber combat. You can see Maul dispatching a group of Mandalorian enemies in the video below.

Red Fly employees believe the cancellation was connected to the sale of Lucasfilm and LucasArts to Disney, as was the case with Star Wars 1313.

There’s more coverage of the game, and some exclusive footage, over at Game Informer.

New Star Wars Episode VII Details Revealed by Lucasfilm

star warsOfficial information about Star Wars Episode VII has been pretty thin on the ground, with new rumours springing up online on a seemingly daily basis, however Lucasfilm has finally decided to treat fans to a few tidbits about the movie.

It was announced via starwars.com that the movie will begin principal photography in May 2014 at London’s Pinewood Studios. It has also been confirmed that it will be set roughly 30 years after Return of the Jedi, which makes sense considering the age of the original trilogy’s stars, Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford and Carrie Fisher, who are said to be returning. The movie will centre around “a trio of new young leads” alongside “some very familiar faces”.

There is still no official casting news on any of the movie’s leads, with Adam Driver and Lupita Nyong’o the most recent names to be linked to roles.

Star Wars Episode VII officially hits theaters on December 18, 2015.

Star Wars Episode VII To Open in December 2015

Star_Wars_LogoLucasfilm has announced the official release date for the new Star Wars sequel. Episode VII, yet to receive a full title, will arrive in cinemas on December 18 2015.  This will be the first time a Star Wars film has shown during the Christmas period, with all previous installments premiering in May. The announcement comes despite apparent problems with the script, with J.J. Abrams and Lawrence Kasdan recently taking over writing duties from Michael Arndt, although it is unknown how extensive their changes to the story will be.

Alan Horn, Chairman of The Walt Disney Studios (owners of Lucasfilm) released the following statement:

We’re very excited to share the official 2015 release date for Star Wars: Episode VII, where it will not only anchor the popular holiday filmgoing season but also ensure our extraordinary filmmaking team has the time needed to deliver a sensational picture.

Star Wars Rebels Debut Trailer

The first teaser trailer for Star Wars Rebels has been released online following it’s first airing on Disney XD. The very brief clip gives nothing away in terms of story details but does give us a look at the visual direction of the new animated series, which takes inspiration from the work of original Star Wars concept artist Ralph McQuarrie. The series will take place between Episodes III and IV and, as the title suggests, will explore the early days of the rebel alliance.

The brevity of the teaser is understandable given that the series is not set to begin airing until Fall 2014.  Stay tuned to Gaming Outpost Alpha for more info as it becomes available.
