If you’ve ever played Mass Effect then you’ll know that there are quite a lot of customization options open to you upon starting the game, including choosing a name for your Shepard. Red Fly Studios recently revealed that they were working on a game based on Darth Maul, the mysterious Sith Lord from Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace. Unfortunately the game was cancelled on June 24, 2011 when the project had barely gone beyond the prototype phase.
Red Fly were also behind the development of Star Wars: The Force Unleashed 2 on the Nintendo Wii – the cancelled Maul game was originally set to be a Wii exclusive but soon became a multi-format project. Plot details are scarce (a script writer had yet to even be hired) but George Lucas apparently requested that the story be told in a ‘buddy cop’ style, with Darth Maul teaming up with Darth Talon. The gameplay would have been a combination of stealth and lightsaber combat. You can see Maul dispatching a group of Mandalorian enemies in the video below.
Red Fly employees believe the cancellation was connected to the sale of Lucasfilm and LucasArts to Disney, as was the case with Star Wars 1313.
There’s more coverage of the game, and some exclusive footage, over at Game Informer.
