The BBC has announced that it will be launching a new Doctor Who game online this week. Titled The Doctor and The Dalek the game will help teach children basic computer coding skills in accordance with the UK’s Key Stage 2 and 3 computing curriculum.
It features voicework from The Doctor himself, Peter Capaldi, as well as an original story written by Phil Ford. Jo Pearce of BBC Wales Interactive explained the concept of the game, saying:
Children will be learning these increasingly important new skills while being actively entertained. The idea behind it is simply to use one of our biggest, most popular brands to inspire children to find out more about programming.
The game will be available on the CBBC website from Wednesday, you can watch the trailer below.
Doctor Who is getting a new recurring character played by Samuel Anderson (The History Boys, Gavin & Stacey, Emmerdale) for Peter Capaldi’s first series as the Doctor. Anderson will play Danny Pink, a teacher at Coal Hill School, where Clara Oswald (Jenna Coleman) also works.
Anderson said of being cast:
I was so excited to join Doctor Who I wanted to jump and click my heels, but I was scared I might not come down before filming started! It’s a quintessential part of British culture and I can’t believe I’m part of it. It’s an honour to be able to work alongside Peter Capaldi and Jenna Coleman and I can’t wait to show people how my character becomes involved with such a fantastic duo!
Showrunner Steven Moffat added:
‘For the fourth time in Doctor Who history, Coal Hill School is coming to the aid of the TARDIS. In 1963 teachers Ian Chesterton and Barbara Wright accompanied the First Doctor. These days it’s the turn of Jenna Coleman as Clara Oswald. And very soon now, Sam Anderson as Danny Pink will be entering the world of the Doctor. But how and why? Answers are coming later this year in Peter Capaldi’s first series of Doctor Who!
Series 8 will begin airing later this year, with filming currently underway on episode 4, guest starring Robert Goodman (Gangs of New York, Game of Thrones) and episode 5 which will co-star Jonathan Bailey (Broadchurch) and Pippa Bennett-Warner (The Smoke, Death in Paradise).
