Marvel and Netflix have agreed a deal to create four live action series based on characters from Marvel comics. The first series to hit the popular online TV service will be based on Daredevil, followed by shows focusing on Jessica Jones, Iron Fist and Luke Cage. Each series will be intertwined, with all four taking place in “the gritty world of heroes and villains of Hell’s Kitchen, New York”, eventually leading up to a miniseries entitled “The Defenders” where the four heroes will team up.
The first series will begin in 2015 and Netflix has committed to a minimum of thirteen episodes for each series, meaning we have a whole lot of Marvel TV to look forward to.
The project will be produced by Marvel Television in association with ABC Television Studios. Alan Fine, President of Marvel Entertainment said:
This deal is unparalleled in its scope and size, and reinforces our commitment to deliver Marvel’s brand, content and characters across all platforms of storytelling. Netflix offers an incredible platform for the kind of rich storytelling that is Marvel’s specialty. This serialized epic expands the narrative possibilities of on-demand television and gives fans the flexibility to immerse themselves how and when they want in what’s sure to be a thrilling and engaging adventure.
Netflix Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos added:
Marvel’s movies, such as ‘Iron Man’ and ‘Marvel’s The Avengers,’ are huge favorites on our service around the world. Like Disney, Marvel is a known and loved brand that travels. With ‘House of Cards’ and our other original series, we have pioneered new approaches to storytelling and to global distribution and we’re thrilled to be working with Disney and Marvel to take our brand of television to new levels with a creative project of this magnitude.
Marvel has wasted no time in working on a new Daredevil project after they got the rights to the character back from 20th Century Fox in 2012. The most recent filmed version of the character was the 2003 movie starring Ben Affleck.

Actor, Vin Diesel has seemingly confirmed his role in Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy after posting a picture of the character Groot on his Facebook page. Vin Diesel has long been rumored to be up for a part in the Marvel cinematic universe although if he is indeed to play Groot it may come as a surprise to some as, in the comics, the character, who is an alien tree-like creature, is only capable of saying the words ‘I am Groot’. When asked about the potential role by The LA Times Vin Diesel said:
As an actor, not everything has to be the most obvious choice. And sometimes, the best thing you can do — as far as Steven Spielberg and his advice — is to defy expectations. So if everybody thinks you’re going to go for this one thing and you flip it entirely and go for the strangest Marvel character, it’s interesting. And when something is interesting, it’s inspiring.
Guardians of the Galaxy is scheduled for release on 1 August and already boasts a star-studded cast that includes Benicio Del Toro, Zoe Zaldana, Chris Pratt, Glenn Close and Karen Gillan.
