Lucasfilm has announced the official release date for the new Star Wars sequel. Episode VII, yet to receive a full title, will arrive in cinemas on December 18 2015. This will be the first time a Star Wars film has shown during the Christmas period, with all previous installments premiering in May. The announcement comes despite apparent problems with the script, with J.J. Abrams and Lawrence Kasdan recently taking over writing duties from Michael Arndt, although it is unknown how extensive their changes to the story will be.
Alan Horn, Chairman of The Walt Disney Studios (owners of Lucasfilm) released the following statement:
We’re very excited to share the official 2015 release date for Star Wars: Episode VII, where it will not only anchor the popular holiday filmgoing season but also ensure our extraordinary filmmaking team has the time needed to deliver a sensational picture.
