Is Rare Teasing a New Banjo Kazooie Game?

Banjo Kazooie

Rare, the developer famous for franchises such as Banjo-Kazooie, Killer Instinct and Perfect Dark is in for a big year according to composer and sound designer Robin Beanland, who tweeted the following:

If you have played any of the Banjo-Kazooie games then you will remember that musical notes were a collectible item. In addition to this Beanland has previously tweeted an image of a broken banjo, followed by a later tweet showing the banjo repaired.

In recent years Rare has worked on various titles for the Xbox Kinect but has hinted at changing its focus after Microsoft decided to stop bundling the Kinect 2.0 with the Xbox One.

Banjo-Kazooie Spiritual Successor Cancelled According to Composer

Banjo Kazooie

A planned spiritual successor to classic N64 platformer series Banjo-Kazooie has been cancelled according to the game’s composer Grant Kirkhope. Kirkhope was taking part in an “Ask Me Anything” session on Reddit. When one fan questioned him about the project he replied:

The other guys actually had a secret meeting in a pub near Rare and we even got as far as having a character drawn up and a demo level type thing but it all fell to bits …. everyone’s got other jobs etc.

The game was to be developed by a team of ex-Rare staff who took to twitter under the name “MingyJongo” to keep fans updated about the project. The account however has not been active since December 2012 and a planned Kickstarter project never came to fruition.

The original games, Banjo-Kazooie and Banjo-Tooie, are still very highly regarded in the gaming community so this news will come as a disappointment to fans. There have been no new releases in the Banjo series since 2008’s Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts and Bolts which was itself a drastic departure in gameplay style from the original games.
