Footage of Cancelled Darth Maul Game Emerges

Red Fly Studios recently revealed that they were working on a game based on Darth Maul, the mysterious Sith Lord from Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace. Unfortunately the game was cancelled on June 24, 2011 when the project had barely gone beyond the prototype phase.

Red Fly were also behind the development of Star Wars: The Force Unleashed 2 on the Nintendo Wii – the cancelled Maul game was originally set to be a Wii exclusive but soon became a multi-format project. Plot details are scarce (a script writer had yet to even be hired)  but George Lucas apparently requested that the story be told in a ‘buddy cop’ style, with Darth Maul teaming up with Darth Talon. The gameplay would have been a combination of stealth and lightsaber combat. You can see Maul dispatching a group of Mandalorian enemies in the video below.

Red Fly employees believe the cancellation was connected to the sale of Lucasfilm and LucasArts to Disney, as was the case with Star Wars 1313.

There’s more coverage of the game, and some exclusive footage, over at Game Informer.

Dig for Atari E.T. Games gets the Go-Ahead

The excavation of a landfill in Alamogordo, New Mexico, where millions of copies of unpopular Atari 2600 game E.T. are supposedly buried, has finally been given the go-ahead by the New Mexico Environmental Department. The dig was recently delayed over concerns of potentially hazardous chemicals found at the site, however the NMED is now satisfied that there is no immediate danger unless a person is exposed over a “very extended amount of time”.

If you thought your nightmares were buried, you were wrong.

The NMED also said the original excavation plan was too vague but are now happy providing they are given five days notice before digging begins and that all waste haulers are certified.

Lightbox Entertainment and Fuelbox Entertainment are behind the excavation which is to be filmed for a documentary about the rise and fall of Atari. It is being directed by X2 writer Zak Penn and will be available exclusively on Xbox 360 and Xbox One later this year.

Assassin’s Creed: Unity Confirmed by Ubisoft

Ubisoft has released a short teaser trailer, comprised of alpha game footage, confirming the existence of Assassin’s Creed: Unity. The trailer also confirms that Unity will be set in Paris, which was suspected after screenshots of the game were leaked showing various famous locations from the French capital. Ubisoft stated that they “weren’t quite ready to show you our full vision for a next-gen only AC”, but presumably the leaks changed their minds. You can view the trailer for yourself below.

The game has been in the works for 3 years and will be released for Playstation 4, Xbox One and PC towards the end of the year. Another Assassin’s Creed game, subtitled ‘Comet’, is rumoured to be in the works for Playstation 3 and Xbox 360, but Ubisoft has not yet made an announcement regarding that title.

Keiji Inafune Still Hopes Mega Man Legends 3 Could Happen Someday

mml3Mega Man creator Keiji Inafune has revealed he still has desires to complete Mega Man Legends 3, the 3DS action RPG that was cancelled by Capcom in 2011 to the disappointment of many fans of the franchise. Talking to US Gamer, Inafune said:

If somebody asked, even right now, what’s the game you want to create most? It’s still Legends 3. I put so much effort into that game, so much passion into that game, but it didn’t happen. It’s always a regret in my mind. Even now…

We all know that’s not going to happen, though, as long as Capcom holds the IP. But if they asked me to make that game, I could still gather most of the original team, even right now. Some of them have quit Capcom, some of them are still at Capcom, but I believe that team would be passionate enough to come back together and create that game. So…we’ll see what’s going to happen. You never know.

Let’s say that, if we have all seven Dragon Balls right here, right now, and Shen Long comes up and says, ‘What’s your wish?’ My wish would be, give me all the right tools, people, and environment to create Legends 3.

Inafune has since moved onto other projects away from Capcom, including what many consider the spiritual successor to Mega Man, Mighty No. 9. However it would surely be to the delight of many fans if Inafune was to get his wish, although it remains a somewhat unlikely prospect.

Meanwhile, if you don’t feel like waiting around for Mega Man Legends 3, you can check out this trailer for Mighty No. 9 which was shown at this week’s Game Developer’s Conference.

Microsoft Planning to Reward Well Behaved Xbox Live Users

XboxLive_LogoHey gamers, have you been good boys and girls and boys this year? Well good news if you have, especially if you own an Xbox, as Microsoft has announced plans to introduce a reward system for players with a good reputation.

The plans were revealed by Microsoft development lead Frank Savage at this year’s GDC (Game Developer’s Conference). According to Savage, it’s Microsoft’s way of saying “Thanks for being such a good member of the community, here’s a reward.”

Although only in the brainstorming stages at the moment, Microsoft hopes that offering rewards will encourage better behavior standards in their online community, rather than simply punishing players who behave poorly. Currently players who receive an abundance of negative feedback from others have their bad behavior reflected on their gamercard and are forced to play with other bad players in multipayer matches.

It is unknown at this stage what the rewards might be, but we will update you as more details about these plans are revealed.
