New Super Smash Bros. Screenshot Teases Luigi’s Final Smash

luigisupersmashbrosSuper Smash Bros. game director Masahiro Sakurai has been regularly treating fans to images from the upcoming Wii U and 3DS versions of the game via Miiverse and today he posted the above screenshot which, if the strange glow surrounding Luigi is anything to go by, shows what Luigi’s ‘Final Smash’ will be in the game.

In case you don’t recognize the contraption Luigi is holding, it is the Poltergust 5000 from Luigi’s 3DS outing Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon. He of course wielded an earlier iteration of the ghostbustin’ vacuum in the original Luigi’s Mansion on Gamecube.

The Poltergust will presumably replace Luigi’s previous Final Smash, the ‘Negative Zone’, from Super Smash Bros. Brawl which caused damage to any enemies trapped in it’s damage zone. The change to the Poltergust makes sense as it is more easily identifiable with Luigi and further sets his move-set apart from his brother Mario.

Alongside the image Sakurai said:

Luigi might be thinking, “Who would’ve thought I’d get to show off the Poltergust in Super Smash Bros.?!” Wondering if it’s going to suck something in? Yeah, it probably will.

Nintendo has not yet announced a firm release date for Super Smash Bros., but it is expected sometime this year on Wii U and 3DS.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Official Trailer

Paramount Pictures have released an official trailer for their live-action adaptation of classic comic/cartoon series Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Check it out below.

The film is directed by Jonathan Liebman (Battle Los Angeles, Wrath of the Titans) and produced by Michael Bay – which probably won’t come as a surprise as the trailer definitely has a Transformers vibe about it, and not just because of the presence of Megan Fox as April O’Neil. The cast also includes Will Arnett as April’s ‘wise-cracking cameraman’ Vern Fenwick and William Fichtner as the Turtles’ nemesis Shredder. The turtles themselves are CGI creations filmed using motion capture technology.

The movie will hit cinemas in the USA on 8 August 2014 and the UK on 17 October.

New Trailer for Tom Cruise Sci-Fi Edge of Tomorrow

Warner Bros and Village Roadshow have released a new trailer for upcoming science-fiction film, Edge of Tomorrow. The movie, starring Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt, is based on Japanese novel, All You Need Is Kill by Hiroshi Sakurazaka.

The book’s title is certainly apt as the plot involves Cruise’s character, Lt. Col. Bill Cage, dying over and over again as he fights in a war against alien invaders known as Mimics. Cage discovers he is stuck in a time loop and with the help of Special Forces warrior Rita Vrataski (Blunt) gradually becomes more skilled in combat, surviving a little longer each time. Cage’s ultimate aim is to break the cycle and find a way to defeat the invaders.

Edge of Tomorrow is directed by Doug Liman (The Bourne Identity, Mr. & Mrs. Smith) and also stars Lara Pulver, Marianne Jean-Baptiste, Jeremy Piven, Bill Paxton, Charlotte Riley, and Jonas Armstrong. It will hit cinemas worldwide on June 6th 2014.

Advance Wars to be First GBA Game on Wii U Virtual Console

advancewarsNintendo of Europe has announced that Game Boy Advance classic Advance Wars will be released on the Wii U Virtual Console on 3rd April. This will come as a pleasant surprise to Wii U owners as the strategy title was not included in the original line-up of games that Nintendo announced back in February. That means we still have Metroid Fusion, Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga and Super Mario Advance 3: Yoshi’s Island to look forward to on the service later in the month.

Nintendo of America has not yet confirmed whether the game will hit the US eshop at the same time. You can see Nintendo of Europe’s original statement, made via Twitter, below.

Atari E.T. Excavation Put on Hold

atari-etPlans to unearth copies of the notoriously bad E.T. game for Atari 2600,  buried in a New Mexico landfill, have been put on hold due to safety concerns.

Two companies, Fuel Entertainment and LightBox Interactive, wanted to film the excavation for a documentary about the burial of the game. Millions of copies were supposedly dumped at the site in Alamogordo, New Mexico in  the 1980’s after the game’s disastrous commercial performance, however The New Mexico Environment Department was not satisfied with the reasons for the dig saying that the plans were “generic” and lacking in site-specific details. Elevated chemical levels were also found at the site in 2004 which could cause a lengthy delay to the excavation while further testing is carried out.

The NMED is waiting for a revised proposal from the documentary team, which they had not received as of March 17, however Catherine Pasciak, a producer for LightBox, said they are still planning on completing the film once the project has been approved.

The documentary is set to be released on the Xbox One when it has been completed.

Batman: Arkham Knight Screenshots Show How Villains will Look on Next-Gen Consoles

penguin-twofaceRocksteady has released three new images from Batman: Arkham Knight. The images, posted by Game Informer, show some familiar villains from earlier Arkham titles but they have been given a lick of paint for their debut appearance on next-gen consoles.

David Hego, Arkham Knight’s art director, explained the thinking behind the fresh designs:

We tried to add something to the characters, so you’re still excited about them even after meeting them for the third time. How can we make these guys exciting, even after seeing them again? Every time, we make them look better and better and better, but at the same time, how can we improve the story behind them?

Arkham Knight’s main villain, Scarecrow, unleashes a chemical attack on Gotham during Halloween, which influenced some of the changes to character designs. Speaking about Penguin, lead character artist Albert Feliu said:

This time, we went for autumnal mafia. We took the coat off, and the concept of Penguin was more of a dirty dude. Obviously his shirt is rolled up and sweaty, and he has food stains on it. But still, he’s really powerful. He’s got a golden chain, as well. We had to be a bit crazy with this character, and working with his design. And we shaved his head. He’s proper filthy, you know

Based on the screenshots the character who has changed the least is Two-Face, with Rocksteady already satisfied with his established design. “We just rolled up his sleeves and made him look really next-gen”, Feliu said, “He was already a really strong character, so we tried to push it, and keep going that way. We didn’t want to change it that much.”

twofaceThe final character shown in the trio of images is the Riddler, who will have a more prominent role than in previous titles, “This time around, you see him throughout the game, and he evolves” Feliu Said.

The Riddler’s appearance will  change throughout the game, similar to how Batman has shown signs of damage and fatigue as the adventure has gone on in previous games. The Riddler will go from dapper to dirty and become visibly distressed as his plans are continuously ruined by Batman.

riddlerRocksteady has not yet revealed how Scarecrow will look in the new game but you can expect him to appear a little worse for wear following his encounter with Killer Croc in Arkham Asylum.

Assassin’s Creed: Unity Confirmed by Ubisoft

Ubisoft has released a short teaser trailer, comprised of alpha game footage, confirming the existence of Assassin’s Creed: Unity. The trailer also confirms that Unity will be set in Paris, which was suspected after screenshots of the game were leaked showing various famous locations from the French capital. Ubisoft stated that they “weren’t quite ready to show you our full vision for a next-gen only AC”, but presumably the leaks changed their minds. You can view the trailer for yourself below.

The game has been in the works for 3 years and will be released for Playstation 4, Xbox One and PC towards the end of the year. Another Assassin’s Creed game, subtitled ‘Comet’, is rumoured to be in the works for Playstation 3 and Xbox 360, but Ubisoft has not yet made an announcement regarding that title.
