Four New Marvel TV Series Announced Exclusively For Netflix

marvel+netflixMarvel and Netflix have agreed a deal to create four live action series based on characters from Marvel comics. The first series to hit the popular online TV service will be based on Daredevil, followed by shows focusing on Jessica Jones, Iron Fist and Luke Cage. Each series will be intertwined, with all four taking place in “the gritty world of heroes and villains of Hell’s Kitchen, New York”, eventually leading up to a miniseries entitled “The Defenders” where the four heroes will team up.

The first series will begin in 2015 and Netflix has committed  to a minimum of thirteen episodes for each series, meaning we have a whole lot of Marvel TV to look forward to.

The project will be produced by Marvel Television in association with ABC Television Studios. Alan Fine, President of Marvel Entertainment said:

This deal is unparalleled in its scope and size, and reinforces our commitment to deliver Marvel’s brand, content and characters across all platforms of storytelling. Netflix offers an incredible platform for the kind of rich storytelling that is Marvel’s specialty. This serialized epic expands the narrative possibilities of on-demand television and gives fans the flexibility to immerse themselves how and when they want in what’s sure to be a thrilling and engaging adventure.

Netflix Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos added:

Marvel’s movies, such as ‘Iron Man’ and ‘Marvel’s The Avengers,’ are huge favorites on our service around the world. Like Disney, Marvel is a known and loved brand that travels. With ‘House of Cards’ and our other original series, we have pioneered new approaches to storytelling and to global distribution and we’re thrilled to be working with Disney and Marvel to take our brand of television to new levels with a creative project of this magnitude.

Marvel has wasted no time in working on a new Daredevil project after they got the rights to the character back from 20th Century Fox in 2012. The most recent filmed version of the character was the 2003 movie starring Ben Affleck.
